While the family-friendly IMAG History & Science Center is well-known for its many indoor features, displays, presentations, and exhibits, such the Sea-to See Touch Tank, The Engineering Lab, The Animal Lab, and enchanting aquariums like the USS Mohawk, specially created by the Animal Planet channel's Tanked team as a replica of the original that now lies under the sea off Sanibel Island. The tank provides touch screens for curious observers. Outdoors, there are amazing opportunities that will thrill and teach.
Take, for example, the Waterworks exhibit. “It’s a hands-on, interactive, fun exhibit with locks, dams, gates, and other structures that demonstrate flow dynamics and their effect on water and navigation,” says Marketing Manager Richard Smith.

Waterworks.
Outdoors, there’s also the famous Earnie’s Estuary, which is home to many aquatic animals, such as Japanese koi, carp, bluegill, catfish, and a variety of turtles. Plus, you can feed them! It’s a real thrill for adults and the younger crowd, as is walking the boardwalk. Signage helps guests identify the many aquatic animals. Right across the way is the Tortoise Enclosure.
Fossil hunters will love the Caloosahatchee Fossil Hunt with a water tower. “The hunt allows guests to prospect for fossils like trilobites and ammonites, as well as other treasures like prospectors who once panned for gold,” says Smith.
The backyard is also a great place to learn about Florida-Friendly, a set of nine science-based principles developed by the University of Florida to create sustainable, environmentally friendly landscapes. There’s a nature walk with signage that explains principles such as Right Plant/ Right Place, Water Efficiently, and Attract Wildlife. “Hidden dinosaurs and their eggs are here in the backyard,” adds Smith.
Outdoors, there are also seating areas to take a shaded rest.
So, head to IMAG and enjoy the many indoor and outdoor offerings. It’s a great way for youth to learn about science, technology, and more through hands-on experiences. Hours of operation are Monday – Saturday from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, closed Tuesday, Sunday from Noon to 5:00 pm.
